When I think of creamy cucumber salad, the first thing that usually comes to mind is sour cream. It’s one of the most commonly used ingredients to make this salad’s creamy, tangy dressing — and it also happens to be my favorite. So when it came time to choose contenders for our creamy cucumber salad showdown, I was excited when I stumbled on a popular recipe from Taste of Home called Sour Cream Cucumbers.
I love a good cucumber salad dressed with a creamy and tangy sour cream dressing, and after reading so many glowing reviews, I was excited to try this one. Here’s how it went.
How to Make Taste of Home’s Sour Cream Cucumbers
This recipe was the easiest and fastest of the bunch. You whisk together sour cream, vinegar, sugar, and black pepper in a large bowl until combined. Add thinly sliced cucumbers and sweet onion and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least four hours before serving.
My Honest Review of Taste of Home’s Sour Cream Cucumbers
If there’s one thing I learned from this recipe, it’s that cucumber salad needs salt. This is the only recipe I tested that didn’t call for any salt at all — the cucumbers aren’t salted and strained, and there’s no salt in the dressing. Not only did this make the dressing decidedly sweet, but it also meant the flavor of the salad was flat and bland.
On a positive note, the amount of dressing was minimal, which I actually didn’t mind. And since the cucumbers weren’t salted and strained or swimming in dressing, they remained quite crisp and crunchy.
